Oh sweet Jesus... will it never end? Why don't we just have Babs and Oprah run against each other?
I am physically nauseous from all this crap. Nobody gives a damn about the issues or they'd be ignoring these fucking celebrity candidates and start to pay attention to the people who could really lead this country in the manner that we need now. Sadly, I'm afraid we get the leaders we deserve. I want my country back. Oprah was no surprise. She's the Queen of Givaway's. Oprah stimulates the greed and consumerism in giving everything from clock radios, towels, cars to a bunch of hysterically howling and squealing women. more »

She is so firmly straitlaced that she's never had a boyfriend or a romantic relationship that anyone knows about.
Perhaps that's just because she's actually managed to create a zone of privacy around herself; if so, more power to her. But from a certain perspective, she seems also to embody a more contradictory legacy of Birmingham than any of us would like to admit: She embodies a "safe" but weirdly racialized prurient prudishness. She is a little girl who is older and wiser than she should be, yet a middle-aged woman who acts younger and more flirtatious than she should. She is a tightly fitted mask of compulsive politeness pulled over both great grief and corrosive, unhealed cruelties. more »

The corporate media is abuzz with the notion that there was a Palestine-Israel peace conference in Annapolis.
That this claim is being taken seriously six years into the Bush Regime is another remarkable proof that, in this bought-and-paid-for corporate capitalist society, journalism is doornail-dead. Read this excerpt from the Mother of All Corporate Media, Time magazine [in partnership with CNN!]. The headline inadvertently spills the beans on the real motive behind the laughably-named 'peace conference' - more »

What sent me into a free fall of depression was CNN's instinct for the fatuous in choosing the debate questions.
It is a disgrace that in a two-hour debate (it felt longer) there was not a single question about the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, the power keg in Pakistan or Iran. The fault is not with the earnest YouTubers who sent in questions. The blame entirely rests with Anderson Cooper (a debate host who seemed incapable of asking a relevant follow-up question) and his CNN cohorts who seemed more concerned with goosing the ratings than with grasping the world that the next president will inherit. And, please God, no more debate questions about the Bible. Somewhere in the dim corridors of memory, I recall being taught (admittedly under the liberal Earl Warren Supreme Court) that there were no religious tests for holding public office in the United States. more »
