At a March 24, 2007, anti-war Oakland town meeting called by Congresswoman Barbara Lee, actor Sean Penn stated:

“We are encouraged to self-censor any words that might be perceived as inflammatory - if our belief is that this war should stop today. We cower as you point fingers telling us to ‘support our troops.’ ”

There are other examples of creative people suffering the consequences of their outspokenness since 9/11, but none are as compelling as the saga of the Dixie Chicks, the top-selling “girl group” of all time.

The high level of interest we pay is a monopoly-charge – a forced "tribute" to usurers – it has nothing to do with a free market.

Debt functions as a social control mechanism, making us anything but "free". You can't afford to be choosy about jobs if you're in debt.

The pervasive impression is that the impending judgement by the Supreme Court regarding the propriety of President General Pervez Musharraf's re-election as president of Pakistan for another term prompted the timing of his decision to impose emergency rule last week.

The temptation to view the developments in Pakistan through the prism of democracy is almost irresistible.

But democracy is not even a sub-theme in the current world of realpolitik in Pakistan. At best it forms a miniscule part of the story.

What emerges beyond doubt is that Musharraf's move enjoys the support of the top brass of the Pakistan armed forces.   more »
