>Bitch | Feminist Response to Pop Culture is a print magazine devoted to incisive commentary on our media-driven world.
We feature critiques of TV, movies, magazines, advertising, and more-plus interviews with and profiles of feminist pop culture makers, new books and music, and lots more. Bitch seeks to be a fresh, revitalizing voice for feminism, one that welcomes complex arguments, showcases witty and whip-smart critiques of popular culture, and refuses to ignore the contradictory and sometimes uncomfortable details that constitute the realities of life in an unequivocally gendered world. Bitch is about formulating replies to the sexist and narrow-minded media diet that we all - intentionally or not - consume. It's about critically examining the images of femininity, feminism, class, race, and sexuality that are thrown at us by the media. more »

A growing number of Americans are coming to realize that the supposed ongoing 'war' is not even a real war. It's a bloody, imperialistic occupation of another country.
A growing number of Americans are beginning to suspect the massive bloodshed and destruction inflicted on Iraq is being done simply to create a permanent outpost for Imperial America in the Middle East. As more Americans are becoming suspicious of what the cabal in the White House is up to, Bush is forced to fall back more heavily on the most common tools of jingoistic demagoguery, even though he scarcely has the verbal ability to become a true demagogue in the tradition of a Hitler or a Father Coughlin. One of the most absurd examples of his rhetoric take place when he turns to an old and reliable obfuscatory term, namely "evil". When asked by reporters what the purpose of the current war is, he has more than once replied, "This is a war against evil." more »

Divide and conquer.
That's what they are afraid of; common cause between the lower and middle classes against the upper. It's always been this way. But, in America, the middle class finds itself in its weakest position since the Great Depression. As a matter of fact, our economy, pinned as it has been on the Petro-dollar, is one or two Bush follies away from a major "correction." The middle class has been so screwed over the last generation or so by the "market" that the elite can no longer ignore the numbers and the stress suffered by worker bees. more »

Invited by Timothy Garton Ash to define “the essence of Blairism” abroad for the Guardian, Blair replied, “liberal interventionism”.
Liberal imperialism would be a better way of putting it – the imposition of free market capitalism on the world by the Western powers in the name of democracy. Even before George Bush entered the White House, Blair had outlined what he called this “doctrine of international community” in a speech in Chicago in April 1999. It was then, apparently, that a politician who had hitherto seemed ambitious but lacking in ideas or focus, bored by the details of domestic policy, discovered a mission in life – to impose Western “values” by force. The result has been what the journalist John Kampfner called “Blair’s Wars” – Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Iraq. more »

When Bush began the process to go to war with Iraq, it was Andy Card who led the war's marketing campaign, as he described it.
He formed the White House Iraq Group, which coordinated the administration's statements about Iraq. All the talk about aluminum tubes, Nigerian yellowcake uranium, smoking guns and mushroom clouds can be laid at his feet. It was a propaganda campaign to drag the American public to war, and it worked. What's more, Card himself admitted that the campaign was cynical. Asked about the timing of the campaign by a New York Times reporter, specifically why it started after Labor Day, Card remarked, "From a marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in August." A war that has killed and maimed thousands of Americans, a war that has destroyed many more Iraqi lives, a war that has become an immense tragedy for all involved, was to him no more significant than the release of a new product more »
