Bush yesterday tried to buy a few more months for his Iraq war plan after a blunt warning by Republican congressmen that their patience would not last beyond September.

The president's plea for time, so the 30,000 additional forces he sent to Iraq could produce results, came as the House of Representatives was expected to vote on a spending bill to cut funding for the war by late July unless there are clear signs of progress on the ground.

Bush was prodded into action after moderate Republicans at a meeting in the White House told him that he could not count on the support of his party beyond September, when the commander of US forces in Iraq, General David Petraeus, is to deliver his progress report.

In remarks at the Pentagon, Mr Bush tried to release the growing pressure for a withdrawal of US forces, and asked Americans repeatedly to hold on at least until the general delivers his assessment.   more »

Europeans speak of the Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-American model as a synonym for turbo-charged, take-no-prisoners capitalism.

Yet there are some signs, tentative for now but noticeable all the same, that movement is under way even in the US, inside the belly of the capitalist beast. They come partly in reaction to the ever worsening state of inequality in that country.

You can pick your stat, ranging from the claim that just two men - Bill Gates and Warren Buffett - have as much money between them as 30% of the entire American people, to the findings by a federal reserve study that the top 10% of Americans now own 70% of the country's wealth, while the top 5% own more than everyone else put together.   more »
View Article  We Come to Bury Blair, Not to Praise Him
Blair was exactly what Bush needed to sell his fraudulent and immoral war in Iraq to the American public: a seemingly reasonable and non-partisan stamp of international approval (after all, he'd been bosom buddies with Bill Clinton, hadn't he?).

Blair enabled the Bush myth that the invasion of Iraq was a coalition effort, that it wasn't just Mongolia, Moldova, Singapore, Poland, and Tonga making up the Coalition of the Willing to Go Along. It was Britain. Great Britain.

More than being just Bush and Cheney's cheery wingman, Blair was one of their top salesmen, pitching sexed up dossiers, Nigeran yellowcake, and the specter of chemical weapons "ready within 45 minutes" raining down on Europe.

Although Blair was far from the only enabler to Bush's Iraq fantasies -- spineless Congressional Democrats and a wildly compliant press certainly did their part -- the impact of his unwavering support was enormous.   more »
