How many times have we heard President Bush tell the troops that if they die, if they return without arms or legs, or blinded, it is for “liberty,” for “democracy”?

One of the effects of nationalist thinking is a loss of a sense of proportion. The killing of 2,300 people at Pearl Harbor becomes the justification for killing 240,000 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The killing of 3,000 people on Sept. 11 becomes the justification for killing hundreds of thousands of people in Afghanistan and Iraq.

And nationalism is given a special virulence when it is said to be blessed by Providence. Today we have a president, invading two countries in four years, who announced on the campaign trail in 2004 that God speaks through him.

We need to refute the idea that our nation is different from, morally superior to, the other imperial powers of world history.   more »

Why do Democrats keep losing Presidential Elections...? Democrats bombard voters with laundry lists of issues, facts, figures, and policy positions. Republicans offer emotionally compelling appeals to voters' values, principles, or prejudices.

Different groups of voters may have radically different associations to the same thing (whether to guns, gays, abortion, or immigrants).

Unfortunately, these are just the kinds of issues that arouse the most passion and, hence, have the biggest impact on both voting and get-out-the-vote efforts. And they are generally the issues Democrats try to avoid.

If you cede the contentious issues, you cede passion to the other side. And given that people vote with their "guts," if you cede passion, you ultimately concede elections.   more »

Latest: police officials, while denying rumours that the vehicle fire at Glasgow airport, together with the two 'petrol bomb' vehicles decommissioned in London have anything to do with an official anti-terror exercise.

Or anything to do the decisions and policies of either the previous or the recently sworn-in political administrations, are asking the public to accept these incidents as reminders that terrorism is here to stay for the unforeseeable future.

The public must remain vigilant and combative. New laws may be necessary to combat what they say will be a long and hard battle between good and evil.

When asked if such new laws would further curtail social liberties, the official, who requested to remain annonymous, said that no comment could be made at this juncture.   more »

Those with whom I have spoken have serious doubt that Bush and the White House staff really knows what Cheney is doing, why he is doing it, or how he is doing it.

From the outset of this administration, Cheney has been instrumental in placing people loyal to him throughout the Executive Branch.

This is not to say that Bush in not "the decider," for he is, but by shaping the debate and controlling the paper flow, Cheney decides what the decider will decide.

It has long been apparent that Cheney's genius is that he lets George W. Bush get out of bed every morning actually believing he is the President. In fact, his presidency is run by the President of the Senate, for Cheney is its true center of gravity.   more »
