Myth and Propaganda: Bush and the American Illusion

In the great causes of nations, myth and propaganda are essential political ingredients.

Myth tells a nation who they are, what they stand for and attempts to establish good purpose for sending its youth to spill their blood and lose their lives on foreign soil.

Propaganda is the means of propelling myth into motion. Remember the Maine...Make the world safe for democracy...Remember Pearl Harbor...United We Stand...Support Our Troops, etc.

Myth even evokes God as a faithful ally in the acts of murder and theft that war brings. All is 'just' because it is done in His name.   more »

Why can't Americans consider the possibility that we should be wary of judging other tribes

That participating in tribal wars of annihilation might not be a religious obligation -- might, in fact, be mere arrogant savagery.

Why weren't Americans made more aware of this, right around the time that Bush & Co. were telling us that we had a moral obligation to liberate Iraq.

It would have been nice if a few people who knew better had been willing to say outright that even if the war really was about liberation, it was an arrogant invasion born of the ancient belief that our tribe is the only one that knows how life should be lived.

But no one talked about the insanity of bringing Dairy Queen to Iraq because there are no cultural relativists around these days -- no one willing to admit it anyway.   more »

To see how this works, think of how resistance fighters in Iraq are portrayed as brutal unthinking monsters driven by primeval and irrational religious motives. “Our boys”, on the other hand, act in a legal, thoughtful, measured way, driven by the highest motives of courage, honour and universal human ideals.

Little wonder then that 600,000 dead Iraqis need never be named or even counted. Iraqis can even be portrayed as “ungrateful” for not appreciating Western efforts to “help” them.

This kind of interpretation has permeated out of the academy into all areas of Western culture, from novels and films to more overtly political culture.

Rudyard Kipling’s 1899 poem “The White Man’s Burden” describes the colonised as “your new-caught, sullen peoples, half-devil and half-child”. In TV programmes of the 21st century, they are ideologically crazed and high-tech tooled-up terrorists.   more »
