However, if a legislator votes to allow others (be it the government, a commanding officer, or a potential boss) to restrict a person's rights or opportunities based on that person's private life, then the legislator is voting against privacy.
One could argue, then, that the legislator has ceded his own privacy, or that it would be hypocritical for that legislator to then expect their own privacy to be respected. This is the case of Lindsey Graham. He has voted to restrict the rights of gay Americans. He has, in my opinion, used the law to invade the privacy of countless Americans. Because Lindsey Graham is content to use his public role to legislate and regulate the private lives of so many others based on their sexual orientation, I don't lose sleep over others questioning Graham's. I don't care if he's gay. Nobody should. I do care that he is may be a hypocrite. And I very much care that he is legislating discrimination.< more »

Bush has become as certain of his exalted place in history as he is of his policy's rightness.
He projects his image into the future, willing his enshrinement as a great president. History has become a magical incantation for him, a kind of prayerful refuge where he is safe from having to think in the present. For Bush, history is supernatural, a deus ex machina, nothing less than a kind of divine intervention enabling him to enter presidential Valhalla. Through his fantasy about history as afterlife -- the stairway to heaven -- he rationalizes his current course. more »

Rudy was able to remind everyone both that he is the front-runner and also why he is the front-runner.
By so vocally attacking the Democratic front-runner he is assuming the mantle of the Republican party in a manner that gives (admittedly crazy) credence to his notion that he is the only candidate in the race who can: a) take it to the Democrats on their own turf; b) protect America from the conspiracy of liberals, Clintonites and terrorists that would like to turn the nation over to al-Qaida just for the fun of it. Keep that level of fear and anger going, and perhaps nobody's going to notice or care much about the gay/abortion/immigration/six marriages stuff. ( more »

Both Syria and North Korea have denied that they are cooperating in nuclear technology, and Pyongyang issued a harsh condemnation of the Israeli intrusion into Syrian airspace.
The two countries insist that the accusations have been fabricated by the US for political reasons - mainly targeting North Korea. Hawks, notably former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, are concerned by the peaceful direction in which the six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program are going, preferring confrontation. Joshua Landis, a professor at Oklahoma University who is an expert on Syrian affairs and runs Syriacomment.com, said: "Bolton represents the crowd that is very distressed that the US has declared defeat in North Korea by trusting the North Koreans. They would like to scuttle that agreement." more »
