Bush has proposed a $150bn stimulus package and all the main presidential candidates are offering similar measures, including middle-class tax cuts and increased spending on infrastructure.

Ben Bernanke and the Federal Reserve have reduced interest rates by 1.25% in eight days.

But none of these fixes will help much because they do not deal with the underlying anxieties now gripping American voters. The problem lies deeper than the current slowdown and transcends the business cycle.

McCain has been the most fervent advocate of the US war in Iraq among Republican candidates for the White House.

Giving a preview of the flag-waving pro-Iraq-war campaign he would wage in the fall, McCain virtually accused Democrat Hillary Clinton of treason Saturday.

He linked Romney to her - telling a rally in Ft. Myers, “If we surrender and wave a white flag, like Senator Clinton wants to do, and withdraw, as Governor Romney wanted to do, then there will be chaos, genocide, and the cost of American blood and treasure would be dramatically higher.”

Perhaps no candidate has embraced Bush's surge as enthusiastically as McCain. In fact, he doesn't care whether American forces stay in Iraq for "a hundred years."   more »

And then there were two. After 17 debates, starting in South Carolina last April , the remaining two candidates for the Democratic nomination for the presidency came face to face in Hollywood last night for the final debate before Super Tuesday.

After the fireworks of the last encounter between the Democrats, the event at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles - home to the Oscar ceremony - had to be more subdued, and so it proved.

With just two candidates seated next to each other on stage, their elbows almost touching, the evening assumed the role more of a convivial examination of shared values than the intense sparring that has marked the Democratic campaign in recent weeks.   more »
