Wright was called dangerous, extremist, a black nationalist crank from the 1960s who had no place in the political landscape today.

Even after Obama's "keep the whites happy" speech on Tuesday, in which he made clear his differences with Wright, he's still being pressured to do more to concede the point.

Watching all this unfold, my blood started boiling. What I think Wright's critics really don't like is the fact that he is mad.

Although I don't necessarily share all of his analyses or his stridency, I recognize his rage as a general anger about the conditions of black Americans, who he says still deal constantly with racism.   more »

Money didn't buy Paul McCartney love, but the nearly $49 million he's been ordered to pay ex-wife Heather Mills will hopefully give him closure from the woman a British judge Tuesday described as "an explosive and volatile character" and "her own worst enemy."

Justice Hugh Bennett's 58-page High Court ruling on the couple's divorce settlement - made public Tuesday, over Mills' fierce objections - confirmed that the settlement, at $48.6 million, is just one-fifth of the $250 million she sought.

The court document paints a behind-the-scenes portrait of a nightmare four-year marriage that turned into one of the ugliest, most vindictive court battles in living memory.

The government treats its soldiers the way most corporations treat their workforce--as an invisible, disrespected, disposable means to an end that is contrary to workers' interests.

Members of the armed forces come mainly and disproportionately from the working class and from small-town and rural America, where opportunities are hard to come by.

The "economic draft" operates, in effect, to recruit young people from these communities as they sign up to gain job skills, experience and educational opportunities absent from their civilian lives.

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright spent 36 years teaching his congregation how to recognize injustice, and his parishioners sense it all around them now.

On Sunday, more than 3,000 of them filled Trinity United Church of Christ on the city's South Side to pray for their former pastor.

They read a handout that described Wright's newfound infamy as a "modern-day lynching."

They scrawled his name in tribute on the inside of their service programs and applauded as Wright's protege, the Rev. Otis Moss III, stepped to the pulpit.

"No matter what they want," Moss said, "we will not shut up."   more »
