Sadly, many are taken in by Obama's covert message that if you trust in hope you don't have to worry about the details like pensions and health care.
Obama might turn out to be a winner but at the moment the evidence provides little support beyond factors that matter inordinately these days, such as that he is young, good-looking and half black. This is the sort of thing music producers look for in boy bands. Choosing a president is supposed to involve some deeper concerns. Is it too naive in this age of image over substance? Our politics have been subsumed by the values of television and so we continue to look for an American Idol instead of an American President. more »

Colombia has been the US' most eager ally in the region:
Receiving billions of dollars in 'aid' for the 'war on drugs' and the 'war on terror', and more recently, challenging (through force and the threat of force) the revolutionary processes currently underway in Venezuela. Colombia's president, Alvaro Uribe Velez, has been the staunchest US ally in the region, his discourse mimicking that of the Bush administration. But he takes it a step further. He liberally labels his political opposition 'terrorists' or 'communists in disguise', and has promoted as the only viable path to peace in Colombia the military annihilation of the FARC (the oldest and strongest armed insurgency in the continent). more »

The fallacy that lies behind the differential concern for the lives of innocent Israelis and Palestinians is that the massacre in Jerusalem and the massacres in Gaza can be separated.
Israeli deaths are "terrorism," while Palestinian deaths are merely an unfortunate consequence of the fight against "terrorism." But the two are intricately linked, and what happened in Jerusalem is a direct consequence of what Israel has been doing to the Palestinians for decades. There will be an Israeli propaganda effort -- as always -- to present Palestinian violence as being simply motivated by hatred, and divorced from the context of brutal occupation that Palestinians live under. more »
